For the first time ever, a Key Club sponsors a Kiwanis club

The "Northwest Alabamian" newspaper featured Kiwanis and Key Club on its front page July 31, 2010. The Winston County High School Key Club sponsored the Winston County Kiwanis Club and the Key Club was a major factor in creating the corresponding Kiwanis Club.

“Normally, this process is reversed," said Kiwanis International President Paul Palazzolo, who was in town for the chartering ceremony. "Normally, a Kiwanis Club builds a Key Club at a local high school. This has happened in reverse, and there’s nothing wrong with this. This should be a trend around the world. We should hold up the Winston County Kiwanis and Key Club as examples for what we should do around the world."

    Good Evening,

I am a Key Club Adviser and the secretary of a Kiwanis Club; I have a question.  Our Key Club (Holly Pond, Alabama) is working with the Cullman Kiwanis Club to build a park in Cullman.  The Culman Kiwanis Club is offering to businesses and individuals the opportunity to sponsor a flag pole and state flag that will be presented in the "Kiwanis Walk of Flags" for a price of $500.00 each.  Our Kiwanis Club is not a 501c3 organization yet; it is working on it.  The Holly Pond Key Club, I believe is a 501c3.  If a business or individual wishes the tax advantage of a 501c3 donation can the check be written to the Holly Pond Key Club and have the Key Club pay the bill for the flag pole/flags?  Will the individual that sponsors the flag pole receive the 501c3 benefits?  If our Key Club collects more than $50,000.00 in donations will it affect our 501c3 status.

Our Kiwanis Club Board Meeting is Thursday, August 12th.  If it is possible could you give us guidance before the meeting?  An attorney in our Kiwanis Club was not familiar with the structure of Key Club's 501c3 and suggested that we contact International.  Our Kiwanis club has initiated work on obtaining the tax deductible status.

Thank you for your assistance and expertise.
