Basketball tournament supports Key Club's president

North Allegheny High School’s Key Club hosts a basketball tournament to support its presidentChristina at microphone at Hoops for Hope event

In October, North Allegheny High School (Pennsylvania) Key Club President Christina Schuliger underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor. She is still recovering and completing therapy at the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, but doctors say she’ll be able to return home February 8.

On January 15, North Allegheny High School sponsored a basketball tournament, “Hoops for Hope,” in Schuliger’s honor to help raise money for her medical expenses. The North Allegheny Key Club donated money and food and volunteered throughout the event. The club members set up and cleaned up after the event, gave water to the players, staffed the admissions table, the concession stand and the T-shirt table and kept score during the tournament.

Thanks to the T-shirt, bracelet and concession stand sales, admissions, donations, team fees and the silent auction, the Key Club raised $6,726.00 for the Schuliger family.

Kayla Wilson, Key Club lieutenant governor for Pennsylvania District’s Division 3 was the organizer of the event. “When Christina walked in, there were tears of happiness from everyone there,” Wilson says. “Christina had a smile on her face the entire tournament and enjoyed laughing with friends. The few times I sat down, I was shocked at how many people came out to support Christina.”

Wilson has known Schuliger since they were in second grade. “I am very pleased at how the tournament turned out. I could not have wished for a better result,” Wilson says.
