Top 10 tips to prepare children for school

  • Be positive and enthusiastic about the start of school.

  • Give your child a countdown to the start of school.

  • Get a sense of how your child feels about returning to or starting school.

  • If your child is excited, join him or her in the excitement.

  • If your child is worried, be reassuring.

  • If your child is anxious, visit his or her classroom beforehand.

  • If you’re dropping your child off for his or her first day of school, don’t sneak out; say goodbye with a hug and a reminder you will be there to pick him or her up (if appropriate).

  • Give your child a photo or small possession to help with separation anxiety.

  • Make the first day of school special (special breakfast; gift).

  • Wish your child a great first day of school.
