Helping others during the holidays is one of the most powerful ways to spread joy. Whether you’re helping families in need or supporting your favorite cause, service during your winter break can have a lasting impact.
Looking for ideas? Here are five to get you started!
Bring food or supplies to a shelter.
The rush indoors to stay warm can put a strain on local shelters. Check online to see if they have a list of needs — or contact them directly.
Write and send cards.
Brighten someone’s day during the dark winter months with a greeting card. Write cards for a local shelter to hand out to patrons, or to thank volunteers for their service. You can even send a card with a care package for troops overseas, hospitalized children, senior citizens or anyone in need.
Volunteer at an animal shelter.
Shelters are often short on staff to help exercise and socialize their animals. If you’re good with animals, take an hour (or more) once a week to walk a dog or snuggle with a cat. Human interaction has huge psychological and physical benefits for sheltered animals.
Hold a stuffed animal drive.
Not everyone can afford to buy gifts for loved ones. Collect stuffed animals to donate to those in need this holiday season. You could also donate some to local police or fire departments, which often have holiday outreach programs.
Collect coats, hats, mittens or scarves.
Brrrr! It’s cold out there! For some families, coats may be too expensive to fit the budget. Volunteer to host a coat drive for individuals to donate new or gently used coats, hats, mittens or scarves.
