What is Key Club?
Key Club International is the world’s largest student-led service organization for high school students. Through service projects, leadership experiences and community involvement, Key Club helps students develop character, build leadership skills and make a meaningful impact in their schools and communities. Key Club operates in 45 countries around the world and is sponsored by local Kiwanis clubs, creating opportunities for mentorship and support.
At its core, Key Club empowers students to:
- Serve their communities.
- Develop leadership abilities.

- Create lasting friendships.
- Prepare for future success in college, careers and life.
Why should I want my student to join Key Club?
As a parent, you want your student to grow into a confident, responsible and compassionate adult. Key Club provides a safe and supportive environment where students learn these skills through real-world experiences.
Unlike many extracurricular activities, Key Club gives students opportunities to lead projects, collaborate with peers, solve problems and serve causes they care about. These experiences help students build résumés and college/university applications while making a genuine difference in their communities.

Leadership development
Students can participate in leadership conferences, training events and specialized programs such as Key Leader and the Global Leadership Certificate.
International networking
Members become part of a global network of service-minded students, allowing them to engage with peers from different backgrounds and cultures.
Grants for service projects
Members and clubs may access grant opportunities totaling nearly US$100,000 to fund impactful service initiatives in their communities.
Scholarships
Graduating Key Club members may apply for scholarships offered through the Kiwanis Children’s Fund.
Additional scholarship opportunities often are available through local Kiwanis clubs and Key Club districts.

Mental health and well-being
Meaningful connection and service can positively impact student well-being. Through Key Club, students build friendships, find a sense of belonging and develop confidence through service and leadership experiences.
Key Club builds better students and stronger communities. In member surveys:
- 89% said Key Club helped them grow as a leader.
- 96% gained meaningful service opportunities.
- 87% built friendships through the club.
- 76% felt a sense of belonging.
- 94% believed their club welcomes all skill levels.
- 85% said it improved their high school experience.
These opportunities help create a positive environment where students can grow personally while making a difference in others’ lives. Key Club takes the mental health of our students seriously, which is why we partner with Erika’s Lighthouse, an organization dedicated to educating and raising awareness about adolescent depression, encouraging good mental health and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Youth protection
Student safety is a top priority.
Key Club is part of the Kiwanis family of Service Leadership Programs and follows comprehensive youth protection policies designed to provide safe environments for participants. Resources, training and reporting procedures are in place to help protect students and promote positive experiences. Key Club also maintains a dedicated Youth Protection Helpline.
Parents can feel confident knowing that youth protection is an organizational priority at every level of the program.
What are the next steps for starting a club or joining a current one?
If your school has a Key Club, students can get involved in one of the ways:
- Contact the school’s Key Club advisor.
- Attend a meeting or service project.
- Become an active participant in service and leadership opportunities.

If your school does not have a Key Club, starting one is easier than you might think. The process includes:
- Identifying a sponsoring Kiwanis club or community sponsor.
- Securing a faculty advisor.
- Recruiting at least 11 student members.
- Planning for membership dues.
- Completing the charter application process.
- Celebrating the creation of the new club with students, families and community partners.
Parents interested in helping establish a club can work with school administrators, community leaders and local Kiwanis members to begin the process.

Join Kiwanis. Kiwanis clubs sponsor and support Key Club programs worldwide. By joining your local Kiwanis club, you can help strengthen service opportunities for students while making an impact in your own community. Kiwanis members often mentor young leaders and support club activities.
Encourage their commitment. Your support can make a lifelong difference. Help your student make the most of their Key Club experience by:
- Encouraging regular participation.
- Helping them balance commitments and responsibilities.
- Attending recognition events and celebrations.
- Supporting service projects and fundraising activities.
- Celebrating leadership growth and achievements.
- Serving as a chaperone for service projects, events or training.
